"Stone Free"
"Lover Man"
"Red House"
"Freedom"
"Foxy Lady"
"Purple Haze"
"Star Spangled Banner"
"All Along the Watchtower"
"Message to Love"
"Fire"
"Spanish Castle Magic"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"

time-57:21

The audience can be heard clapping along to the opening "Stone Free". Jimi keeps the energy high with "Lover Man"and a blazing "Red House".

Jimi seems to "reward" the audience's appreciation for the newer "Freedom" with  "Foxy Lady" and "Purple Haze". Unusually, the final "Purple Haze" solo bleeds into the "Star Spangled Banner". Next up,the audience is clapping again to "All Along the Watchtower".

The "Message to Love" solo contains a tease of the "Stepping Stone" melody.  A nice late-in-the set "Spanish Castle Magic" shows up just before "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" wraps up this fine concert.

This audience recording hovers between average and above average sound quality. It's a surprisingly concise tape in that pretty much the whole show is there in under one hour.

Swing Auditorium/San Bernardino,CA/June 20,1970

"All Along the Watchtower"
"Room Full of Mirrors"
"Machine Gun"
"Message to Love" (very beginning and very ending is cut)
"Hear My Train A Comin'" (very beginning is cut)
"Foxy Lady" (very beginning is cut)
"Hey Joe" (very beginning is cut)
"Purple Haze" (very beginning is cut)
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (cuts prematurely)

time-43:29

After a bit of talking and tuning up,Jimi launches into "All Along the Watchtower". This might be the only time he opened a show with this Bob Dylan tune. Screaming guitar is featured toward the end of the song.

Jimi opts for a few newer songs before jumping into "Hear My Train A Comin'". This version feels a bit short at less than 6 minutes. It's hard to tell on this tape whether Jimi cut off "Hey Joe" early or not. Either way, less than 2 minutes of it is captured before a jump into "Purple Haze".  "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" features bits of "Midnight Lighning" a.k.a. "Keep On Groovin'" before cutting off at the 6:04 mark.

This is a distant,below-average audience recording.

Baltimore Civic Center/Baltimore,MD/June 13,1970

"Straight Ahead"
"Lover Man"
"Machine Gun"
"Ezy Ryder"
"Red House"
"Message to Love"
"Hey Joe"
"Freedom"
"Hear My Train A Comin'"
"Room Full of Mirrors"
"Foxy Lady"
"Purple Haze"/"Star Spangled Banner"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"

time-72:19

This tape begins with applause quickly followed by the intro to "Straight Ahead". Audience members can be heard saying "THERE HE IS". Jimi introduces Mitch and Billy just before "Lover Man".

A very pretty Uni-Vibe drenched passage leads into "Machine Gun". This version features some very spirited playing. Upon its conclusion,Mitch immediately starts the intro to "Ezy Ryder".

After "Red House" the audience applauds the mention of "Message to Love". Jimi (perhaps?) rewards the audience's appreciation with "Hey Joe".

"Foxy Lady" is introduced as "Thank you for the last three years". "Purple Haze" has the audience clapping along loudly. It sounds like Jimi sings "Whatever it is,that fish put a spell on me". Switching things around a bit, "Star Spangled Banner" serves as the intro to "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

This is an enjoyable, above average audience recording.

Roberts Stadium/Evansville,IN/June 10,1970

"Spanish Castle Magic"
"Fire"
"Lover Man"
"Red House"
"Foxy Lady"
"Machine Gun" (incomplete?)
"Message to Love"
"Freedom"
"Hear My Train A Comin'"
"Star Spangled Banner"/"Purple Haze"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"

time-62:50

"Hello Evansville. How you doin'?" says Jimi. From the first song,it is clear that this audience tape is a rough one. The sound is very bassy, boomy and overdriven.

On a more mellow tune like "Red House",the sound is slightly less abrasive. There is a significant amount of tune-up time between "Foxy Lady" and "Machine Gun".

The ending of "Message to Love" jumps directly into the intro to "Freedom". It's hard to tell whether Jimi did this or the tape was edited.

This show finishes up with "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

Again, this audience tape is terrible sounding. The Harlem 9-5-69 tape is the only one worse than this. But,if you're a big fan of Billy Cox,his bass guitar is very up front on this tape.

"Message to Love"
"Room Full of Mirrors"
"Star Spangled Banner"/"Purple Haze"
"Ezy Ryder"

time-55:15

The taper can be heard talking into the microphone before the concert begins. Jimi starts off with two older songs before getting into "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)". This song cuts out,and we find ourselves in the middle of "Hey Joe".

After "Freedom" an audience member can be heard yelling for "Machine Gun". Instead Jimi mentions President Nixon and plays "I Don't Live Today".

Later on Jimi delves into the new material with "Message to Love" and "Room Full of Mirrors". Unusually he plays some beautiful flamenco guitar as an intro to the "Star Spangled Banner"/"Purple Haze" duo.  "Ezy Ryder" is the final song on this tape.

The sound quality on this audience tape hovers between average and below average.

1st show
"Thanks for showing up" says Jimi before leaping into "Fire". Next up is a "little loose jam type of thing" in the form of a massive "Johnny B. Goode". This may be the last time he played it onstage.

The following version of "Hear My Train A Comin'" originally made its way onto LP with the "Rainbow Bridge" soundtrack. Many people (including this author) consider this performance to be one of Jimi's finest.

A 10 minute "Machine Gun" rips up the small Berkeley Community Theater. Jimi continues the new music with "Freedom". A 7 minute "Red House" slows down the pace a bit with some tasteful blues.

"Ezy Ryder" breaks down into a bass/drums piece before Mitch takes over with a solo. This version showed up years later on "Band of Gypsys 2".

The show wraps up with "Purple Haze" and a brain-splitting solo on "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

2nd show
Jimi starts this show with "Straight Ahead" (a.k.a. "Pass It On"). This song bleeds into a very pretty "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)". "Lover Man" picks up the energy level as the next tune.

The band returns to the old days with "Stone Free" and "Hey Joe" (available on "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts"). A heavy-duty "Machine Gun" shows up later in the set.

Like the previous show,Jimi wraps up with "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

Both of these very fine shows are available as great soundboard recordings. Chunks of the shows are available on the "Jimi Plays Berkeley" film.

"Sgt. Pepper's...."
"Johnny B. Goode"
"Machine Gun"
"Lover Man" (incomplete)
"Foxy Lady" (very ending cuts)
"Red House" (very ending cuts)
"Freedom" (incomplete)
"Fire" (incomplete)
"Hear My Train A Comin'" (sounds incomplete)
"Purple Haze" (very beginning cut)
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (tiny snippet at the end is cut)

time-50:27

This tape begins with Jimi talking about the Liberty Bell. Then Mitch starts the drum intro to "Sgt. Pepper's....". Immediately upon finishing the Beatles tune,Jimi starts "Johnny B. Goode". This is one of Jimi's few live versions of the Chuck Berry classic.

During the intro to "Machine Gun" Jimi mentions the American Revolution in "its third and last phase". This 11 minute version hits some very high points.

"Hear My Train A Comin'" is introduced as "Gettin' My Heart Back Together". This version includes a bit of "Midnight Lightning" lyrics. The song seems to end after about about 6 minutes, but it may just be cut on the tape. "Purple Haze" starts immediately upon the apparent end of "Hear My Train A Comin'". The end of "Purple Haze" bleeds right into the start of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

This is an enjoyable above average audience tape.
