time-30:00

1st show

After a 3 minute tuning segment the JHE heads into "Come On (pt.1)". Noel thanks the crowd in German afterward. Jimi introduces "Hey Joe" as having been recorded in 1733 at the Benjamin Franklin Studios.

"Hear My Train A Comin'" is fairly compact yet intense. Mitch jumps into "Spanish Castle Magic" with a solo around the 6:00 mark.

Rare for a January 1969 show, "Stone Free" shows up later in the set. The JHE plays a stand-alone version of "Purple Haze" to end this show.

2nd show

The JHE tunes up for about 1:45 before Jimi begins "Are You Experienced". The song is brought down to absolute silence before Mitch provides a solo.

Next up is "Fire" and "Lover Man" before "Sunshine of Your Love" finishes off this recording.

This is a very good performance, and the quality of the audience recording is above average.

time-57:43

After a 2:30 tune-up Jimi tears into the intro of "Come On (pt.1)". This version features some blistering guitar playing. After "Fire" Jimi dedicates "I Don't Live Today" to the American Indian.

The intro of "Hey Joe" draws a big cheer from the audience. A fairly compact (less than 5 minutes) version of "Stone Free" shows up later in the set.

Jimi thanks the crowd for showing up prior to "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". This spirited version includes a few teases of "Cat's Squirrel" toward the end.

This is an average sounding audience recording.

"Come On (pt.1)"
"Fire"
"Red House"
"I Don't Live Today"
"Little Wing"
"Foxy Lady"
"Sunshine of Your Love"
"Hey Joe"
"Purple Haze"

time-62:27

Jimi starts by explaining to the audience that much of the show will be "free-jam" oriented. A high-energy "Come On (pt.1)" starts things off right. Even Hendrix says it was "outtasight".

Later in the set is an almost 11 minute "Red House" from the "first English LP".  A tasty wah-wah segment caps off a very pretty "Little Wing".

Jimi reminds the crowd that the JHE does not play Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" "BETTER than them......we dig the group and we dig the cats". Interestingly this version ends with an instrumental flourish and feedback rather than the usual way the band ended it.

Before "Hey Joe" Jimi introduces Mitch Mitchell,Noel Redding and himself on "backward tapes". "Purple Haze" begins immediately on the heels of "Hey Joe".

This is an enjoyable above average 1969 audience tape.

time-60:00

1st show
Jimi introduces Mitch,Noel and himself before heading into a lively "Come On (pt.1)". Next up Jimi dedicates "I Don't Live Today" to the American Indian and the audience. This 7+ minute version includes some intense guitar coupled with melodic soloing.

A very nicely-played 14 minute "Red House" shows up later in the set. "Purple Haze" is played without the "sound painting" or "Star Spangled Banner" intro.

Jimi thanks the crowd for showing up before diving into a 6:50 version of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". Jimi and the band seem to be in good spirits throughout this concert.

For a 1969 audience tape, the sound is pretty decent on this show. Jimi's guitar is very prominent in the mix.

2nd show
After an intro/tuning segment the JHE busts into an energetic "Fire". "Hey Joe" is introduced as having been recorded in 1733.

Jimi mentions his "pookie bear" in "Red House", Sadly, the song cuts out around 4:25. Later in the set the JHE plays a rare (for 1969) "Little Wing". Up next Jimi seems to start "Hear My Train A Comin'" but instead opts for "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

Following audience chants for "WATCHTOWER!!" Jimi decides to play the Dylan track. This is one of only 2 known live versions played by the original JHE. "Purple Haze" brings an end to the proceedings.

This audience tape is below average in terms of sound quality.

"Red House"
"Fire"
"Foxy Lady" (incomplete)
"All Along the Watchtower"
"Hey Joe"
"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"
"Purple Haze" (incomplete)

time-46:30

This audience tape begins with a 13 minute "Red House". Of particular note at this show, the JHE plays "All Along the Watchtower" for probably the only time. Jimi played it during 1970 shows, but it was not a regular feature of 1969 shows.

After a crowd-pleasing "Hey Joe" the JHE plays an almost 9 minute "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

Jimi thanks the crowd for showing up before finishing off with "Purple Haze".

This tape does not make for a pleasant listen. It is a fairly distant and distorted audience recording. For this reason,it is very hard to "dig in" to the details of the show. For completists only.

After briefly asking the crowd to listen and sit down, Jimi begins "Come On (pt.1)". After "Foxy Lady" the JHE blasts the crowd with a 12+ minute "Red House".

Jimi announces "We don't know the words" before jumping into "Sunshine of Your Love". After an almost 3 minute "Star Spangled Banner" the JHE wraps up this show with "Purple Haze".

This is a highly enjoyable recording which seems to be an audience tape. It was released officially in 2013.

time-61:52

Feedback squeals announce the start of "Are You Experienced". Up next is one of the only known versions of "Johnny B. Goode" by the JHE.

Later in the show comes an almost 13 minute "Red House". Wrapping up the show is "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

This is a poor audience recording. The only notable part of this show is the very rare "Johnny B. Goode". Only completists need apply.

"Fire"
"Foxy Lady"
"Tax Free"
"Spanish Castle Magic"
"Red House"

time-67:33

The JHE begins this show with fan favorites "Fire" and "Foxy Lady". Next up is a highly exploratory version of Hansson & Karlsson's "Tax Free" clocking in around 12 minutes.

A very well played "Red House" shows up later in the show clocking in at nearly 15 minutes.  "Electric Church Music-part One" is how Jimi introduces an intense version of "I Don't Live Today".
(Parts of "Star Spangled Banner" and "Third Stone From the Sun" make an appearance in this song.)

"Purple Haze" wraps up this very fine show. The sound quality is quite good for an audience tape. The guitar is very prominent in the mix while the vocals, drums and bass are relegated to the back.

1st show
The MC announces the JHE and their "Electric Church Music". Jimi dedicates the show to the "American Deserters Society". After a "Killing Floor" opener, the band jumps into a 7 minute "Spanish Castle Magic".

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" contains a drum solo starting around the 9:00 mark. Next up is a solid 10 minute "Red House". Jimi rather quickly hops into "Sunshine of Your Love" to finish the show.

This concert is available as a highly enjoyable soundboard recording. A black and white video of the show also exists, and it shows a fairly bored Hendrix going through the motions for the most part.

2nd show
A happier sounding Jimi takes the stage and dedicates the show to "Wally's Case". An almost 8 minute "I Don't Live Today" finishes with some ghostly sounds emanating from Jimi's guitar. "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" contains a sweet unaccompanied guitar piece starting around the 7:40 mark.

This time around "Sunshine of Your Love" contains a solo by Mitch. A high quality 11 minute "Red House" comes next. The audience seems to talk Jimi into playing "Fire" next. Following that, the JHE finishes up with "Purple Haze" and "Star Spangled Banner".

Like the 1st show, this one is also available as a high quality soundboard.

The JHE dives straight into "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" after the MC's intro. Around the 4:00 mark,Mitch jumps in with a solo.

"Red House" sadly cuts out around the 11:30 mark. More blues show up later in the set with a heavy 13 minute "Hear My Train A Comin'".

Up next Jimi announces that he'd like to play "All Along the Watchtower" "but we forgot the words". Instead we get "Spanish Castle Magic" (including Mitch's 2nd solo of the night) which, oddly, jumps right into "Purple Haze".

This is a decent audience tape for 1969.

Later in the set the JHE throws down an almost 12 minute "Red House". Next up is Jimi's tribute to Cream in the form of "Sunshine of Your Love".

Jimi announces "Peace be with you" before closing the show with "Purple Haze".

This is a fairly decent 1968 audience tape.

Jimi wraps up the show with "Purple Haze" minus the "sound painting" intro.

This tape makes for reasonably decent listening for a 1968 audience recording.

While playing an unaccompanied solo during "Spanish Castle Magic", Jimi briefly teases "I Feel Fine".

A 10+ minute "Red House" precedes "Sunshine of Your Love".

This VERY low quality audience tape cuts off after about 5 minutes of "Purple Haze". Casual fans of Jimi should stay far away from this tape.

Jimi kicks off his birthday show with "Sgt. Pepper's....". He introduces "Hey Joe" as being recorded in "1763 in the Benjamin Franklin Studios".

"I Don't Live Today" is dedicated to the audience and the American Indian. The JHE stretches this one out to almost 10 minutes. "Red House" cuts off on the tape around the 14:39 mark.

About 4 minutes of stage talk precedes "Spanish Castle Magic". This 15:30 "Magic" may be the longest ever, and it features an unaccompanied guitar solo.

"Star Spangled Banner" cuts off before "Purple Haze" gets a chance to start.

Sound quality on this tape is quite rough. The performance is excellent, but it's hard to *dig in* to the show due to the bad sound.

This tape begins with an almost 6 minute interview conducted before the show. As can be seen, the only complete song on the tape is "Red House". This one is a very fine  version lasting almost 14 minutes.

For the record, the remainder of the songs are NOT almost complete. They generally cut off after a minute or less. The final part of the tape features an interview (less than 2 minutes) with Jimi after the concert.

The sound quality of the tape is average for a 1968 audience recording.

"Fire" starts off this show and can be found on "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" and other releases.

"Tax Free" is preceded by an almost 10 minute drums and bass jam.

Finishing up this show is a non-stop mix of "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "Wild Thing" which can be found on the "Live at Winterland" release among others.

2nd show
After 2:40 of tuning, feedback and a bit of a false start the JHE blasts into "Foxy Lady". The following "Manic Depression" was released officially on "Live at Winterland".

The ultra-pretty "Little Wing" was chosen for "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts". Up next, "Spanish Castle Magic" made the cut for "Live at Winterland".

A very fine 11:30 "Red House" slows things down a little bit.

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" ends on an odd note when Jimi's guitar just peters out. (Equipment problems?)

"Star Spangled Banner" is introduced as "This Is America" before bleeding into "Purple Haze" to end the evening.

1st show
"Are You Experienced" contains significant surface noise on my copy. Technical issues aside,Virgil Gonzales shows up around the 6:04 mark for a flute interlude. Clocking in close to 16 minutes, this is probably the longest version of "AYE".

Before "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" Jimi asks people to sit down. The surface noise continues on this song.

By the time "Red House" begins, the surface noise has disappeared. This one is a good 11 minute version. "Star Spangled Banner" and "Purple Haze" wrap up this show.

2nd show
After a 3 minute tuning segment the JHE start with "Tax Free". This version can be heard on the official "Live at Winterland" release.

"Spanish Castle Magic" stretches out nicely to 10 minutes with an unusual slower segment.

Jimi brings out a "very heavy organ player" for the next few songs: Herbie Rich from the Buddy Miles Express. Herbie adds nice color to the sound of these songs.

The show wraps up with a version of "Purple Haze" without the spacey intro.

"Red House" is dedicated to the "American and international audiences". The JHE really stretches out on this 14 minute version. Jimi  pours himself into a 9 minute version of "Like a Rolling Stone".

2nd show
Jimi announces a 2 minute delay while the band adjusts its instruments at the start. "Tax Free" is introduced as a "true feeling type thing". This 12 minute version includes a drum solo.

"Hear My Train A Comin'" can be found on "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" and other releases.

"Killing Floor" and "Hey Joe" include Jack Casady (from Jefferson Airplane) on bass guitar.  This version of "Killing Floor" can be found on the official "Live at Winterland" release.

Hendrix thanks Owsley before jumping into "Star Spangled Banner" and "Purple Haze"

The Winterland shows are widely regarded as the finest examples of the JHE in concert. All of these shows are available as highly enjoyable soundboard recordings.

"Red House" is introduced as a song "we recorded in 1793 at the Benjamin Franklin Studios". This one is a solid 9 minute version.

"Sunshine of Your Love" is played as a tribute to Cream. At this point the audience was apparently jumping into the pool between them and the stage. Jimi tries to calm the crowd by playing a mellow "Little Wing".

"Star Spangled Banner" and "Purple Haze" close out this show. This recording is about average for a 1968 audience tape.

The MC yells "THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE!" to start off the night. After a couple minutes of tuning the JHE starts off  "Are You Experienced" with a tease of "Tomorrow Never Knows". At the 4:15 mark "AYE" dissolves into a fairly short drum solo.

"Fire" is introduced as "Let Me Stand Next to Your Old Lady". "Hey Joe" is performed without the extended intro piece.

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" is introduced as "a very straight song". "Spanish Castle Magic" stretches out a little bit to around 7:30.

"Red House" is introduced as being from 1735 and lasts a little over 10 minutes. The JHE closes this show with the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Purple Haze". Sadly the power in the auditorium cuts out during the last bit of "Purple Haze". The MC mumbles a couple words before the tape stops.

This is an average sounding audience recording.
